Mailbox Monday is a weekly meme started by Marcia at Mailbox Monday in which bloggers can ramble on about the books they received/bought/stole over a given week. Each month a new blogger hosts the meme, and this month it’s Mrs. Q: Book Addict.
If
I learned anything last week, it’s that I can’t fight this addiction of
mine—especially when everybody and their mother wants to let me take a hit off
the pipe for freesies. So yeah, I got
more books. Shocker of all shockers,
right? But I didn’t have to pay anything
for ‘em, so I don’t feel bad about it.
Or, maybe not as bad. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself.
--- The Books ---
Poseidon’s
Children, by Michael West – Seventh Star Press (SSP) always
finds a way to bump me off the wagon—what with their free books and their blog
tours and their endless supply of bacon (or at least the talk of bacon). Poseidon’s
Children is book one of the Legacy of
the Gods series, a horror tale about a lost civilization beneath the waves,
Old Gods, and horrific acts of horrible horror.
It sounds kind of Cthulhu-esque, which is cool, ‘cos I love me some
Lovecraft.
Redheart by Jackie Gamber – This SSP goodie was probably the one I was
least excited about—which isn’t to say that it isn’t good (how’s that for
double-speak?). It’s just that,
officially, it’s classified as “YA Fantasy,” which isn’t exactly my thing. But still, I figured, why not? Number one, it’s free, which is always a
plus. Number two, it’s SSP, and they
don’t disappoint. Number three, I’ve
heard good things about Jackie and her writing, so of course I snagged that bad
boy along with the others.
Rise
of Satan by Errol Barr – The author dropped
me a line and requested a review for this puppy, and—even though I’m swamped
with books—I couldn’t bring myself to say no.
It’s a pretty cool idea for a horror novel—a bunch of charismatic
youths, literally the spawn of Satan himself, come together and form a rock
super group and, through their music, gain sway over the youth of the world and
eventually all of humanity. It’s a
little bit sensationalistic, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t a neat idea. Gives a whole new meaning to that Living Colour
song “Cult of Personality.” If you want
to know more about the author or his book, you can find more info on Facebook, Twitter, and his blog.
World
War Z by Max Brooks – Yeah, yeah, I
know. I’m way behind the times on this
one—like, five years behind. But
whatever. I was in need of a zombie fix,
and this is what I could find on audio book at the library. I need some entertainment on the ride to
work, see? But I’ll be damned if it wasn’t, in the words of my friend The Bookmarque, “Effing abridged!” In the
words of my friend Evidently, it’s really expensive to hire so
many voice actors for the different stories in the book. But I did some looking around, and word on the street is that the
unabridged version is in the works. So
will I hold off until the real deal hits the shelves, maintain my unabridged
purity? Eh, probably not. Like I said, Daddy needs someone to read to
him on the way to work. I'll just have to figure out how to get my mitts on the unabridged version when it comes out.
And now that I’ve showed you mine, it’s time to
show me yours. What did you get in your mailbox this week?
Excellent books there. Rise of Satan sounds like a great one. I myself have World War Z but have yet to read it. It's on the list but if you ever want a great zombie read the one I have read and is quite fantastic is The Infection by Craig DiLouie Holy Crap is that a good and scary book add it to the TBR list.
ReplyDeleteYou interviewed DiLouie on your blog a few months ago, right? Yeah, that thing looked pretty good. I'll make sure to look out for it, for sure.
DeleteYes I interviewed him way back and then asked my library to bring it in and finally reviewed it. Omg rocks so much and to thank me he sent me the sequel. Authors are so cool. I am going to have Errol on I so wish I wasn't as busy as I am with reviews because I majorly want to read his book. It sounds like a winner.
DeleteEnjoy! your mailbox this week.

Thanks you, ma'am.
DeleteHoly mother of all that is pure! World War Z id awesome! I wish I was reading it again for the first time. There are parts of that book that I will carry with me forever and ever. Enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteI'm only one disc in, but I can already see what you mean. The way Brooks weaves zombie horror into geopolitical rivalries, conflicts, and history is nothing short of amazing. I sense an angle for a book review here...
DeleteIt is very difficult to fight free books. That's why I usually stay away from Amazon's free books.
ReplyDeleteWorld War Z has been on my list of books to get from the libray for some time. One day it will be available the same day I want to get it.
I'll make sure you're the first to know if it lives up to the hype. I'm thinking it will.
DeleteFirst of all, that mailbox picture brings back great childhood memories. Our mailbox was located directly across the street from the neighbor's driveway. Needless to say, we got a new mailbox every couple of months.
ReplyDeleteAs others have stated, World War Z was one of those buzz books that seems to live up to its hype. I'll be interested to hear your opinions on it. I may have to finally see what all the praise is about.
Finally, I wanted to let you know about a giveaway I have going on. I bought a copy of The 500 by Matthew Quirk a while back, and was pleasantly surprised by it. It was compared to John Grisham's novel The Firm, and I found it to be a really fun legal type thrille, so much so that I contacted the publicist to request a giveaway copy. I hate to further fuel your accumulation of books, but this one may be too good to pass up. Thanks again for all your great posts.
