As many of you know, I have a
great love for gritty books. I mean, I
salivate over anything by James
Ellroy. And part of the reason I
loved the The
Black Company so much was because it was freakin’… raw. So when I heard that
Open Road Media was sponsoring a special event called “Stories of Grit,” I was
immediately intrigued.
It’s a celebration of the
raw, edgy magnificence of gritty literature—mostly focusing on short story
compilations. A full list of the titles
being showcased can be found on the Open
Road Blog, and they’ve set up a Scribd
collection too.
But
the best part? They gave me the choice
of one book in the collection to give away on this here blog. I selected Bradford Morrow’s The Uninnocent. It’s a collection of the critically acclaimed
author’s finest gothic tales. In “The
Hoarder,” a young man whose childhood hobby of collecting sea shells and birds’
nests takes a sinister turn when he becomes obsessed with acquiring his
brother’s girlfriend (selected as one of the Best American Noir Stories of the
Century). An archeologist summoned to attend his beloved sister’s funeral is
astonished to discover it is not she who has died, but someone much closer to
him, in “Gardener of Heart.” And a blind motivational speaker has a crisis of
faith when he suddenly regains his sight, only to discover life was better
lived in the dark, in “Amazing Grace.”
